Pinterest Marketing: What I Learned From Using the Platform to Promote My Brand
Pinterest is my go-to place for getting new photo ideas on the internet.
I’m not alone. Approximately, 335 million people use it monthly to discover new ideas, save interesting images, and get inspired.
But the question is: should Pinterest be a part of your social media marketing strategy?
There are a few advantages and disadvantages of using Pinterest Marketing to promote your website. Today, I’ll share what I’ve learned from using Pinterest to promote my website and help you decide if you should include it in your social media marketing strategy.
But first, let’s discuss what Pinterest actually is.
What is Pinterest?
Pinterest is a social media website that allows its user to discover, share, and save new visual ideas. It started in 2010 and one year after its inception, it became one of the top 10 social networking services.
Its name — Pinterest — tells how simply it works: “pin” what you’re “interested” in. You can browse millions of photos and save (or pin in Pinterest nomenclature) them for later use.
It also gives you a great feature of boards where you can save content with a similar theme and get back to it whenever you want. You can think of Pinterest as your online archive for photos, GIFs, and videos.
Millions of people use this platform on a monthly basis and thousands of businesses use it to drive more traffic, leads, and sales.
But is it going to be beneficial for your business?
Let’s find out!
Advantages of Pinterest Marketing
Driving Traffic and Sales to Your Website
Unlike Instagram, Pinterest allows you to add third-party website links to your content. That makes it a great source for driving more traffic and sales to your website. In fact, 72% of Pinterest users get inspired to shop for something when they are not actually looking for anything.
So if you are a digital marketer, Pinterest is a great website to promote your products and content.
Another way to utilize this advantage is to integrate Pinterest into your website. That way you can send your customers to visual archives of your Pinterest account. It helps many people take a better look at what services you offer and make a decision on buying your services.
Organizing Your Content
Pinterest allows you to organize content through its boards. Board is a feature where you can group many photos and store them as a single unit.
Many social media lack this feature. Using this feature, you can group different posts to educate your audience. Grouping items will make your profile page clutter-free.
For example, if you run an SEO agency and you have different articles on social media marketing e.g. Pinterest Marketing, Facebook marketing. You can arrange those articles in a single board under the name social media marketing.

Pinterest Marketing 101: Linking to Other Social Media Platforms
You can link your Pinterest account to other social media websites like Facebook, Instagram, etc. You can leverage this opportunity to bring more traffic to your website. This also adds to the credibility of your business and makes you an authority in your niche.
For example, if you link your Pinterest account to your YouTube account, it gives your audience more chances to explore your resources and products.
Linking your account to other social media websites also gives you great insights into how your audience interacts with your content. That way you can adjust your content strategy to maximize sales.
Opportunities for New Brands
75% of Pinterest users are interested in new products. This opens the door for marketing for many new businesses. Even if you’re not a new business, it’s always great to find people who are potentially interested in your products.
Think of it in this way: people use Pinterest to find new ideas. When they are browsing this platform, why should they care if it’s a pin from a well-known brand or not? They are looking for inspiration and if your content inspires them, they will follow you.
Now let’s discuss what makes Pinterest not-so-good for marketing your business.
Disadvantages of Pinterest Marketing
70% of Pinterest Users Are Women
Don’t get me wrong here. If you run a business that’s geared towards women, Pinterest is a goldmine for marketing for you. Especially, if your services are for moms.
But if your services are for men, Pinterest might not be the best marketing option for you. This doesn’t mean you should ignore this platform. You should be on this platform no matter what but thorough research will help you decide how much effort you’re going to put into this platform.
It’s All About Looks
The main concept of Pinterest — a center for visuals — also becomes one of its biggest disadvantages. This platform relies solely on visuals. If you create low-quality photos and videos, there’s no chance of getting a high following on Pinterest.
I included this as a disadvantage because getting the best visuals is not always cheap. You’ll have to hire professional graphic designers or photographers which is heavy on the wallet.
Some scammers offer Pinterest users free products after completing a survey. They post these surveys as a well-known company and take the users to another website through an affiliate link. They get users’ personal information and never send them free products.
It is easy to steal other people’s work stored in their accounts. It demotivates the content creators who spend hours on creating valuable content and eventually, someone steals their intellectual property.
Final Thoughts on Pinterest Marketing
Pinterest Marketing has its advantages and disadvantages. How much time and effort you’re going to spend on this platform depends entirely on which business you’re in.
